Early years.
Helena Bonham Carter comes from a high social ancestry family in Great Britain, her father Richard, was banker, and her mother Elena, who has Spanish origin, is a psychotherapist. Both parents suffered various diseases when Helena was still a teenager, her father was paralyzed, and her mother suffered a nervous breakdown. She attended South Hampstead School and Westminster School.
She is great-granddaughter of former British Prime Minister, and maternal granddaughter of the Spanish diplomat Eduardo Propper de Callejón, apart of being granddaughter-niece of the director Anthony Asquith.
Career path
After making her debut on television, Helena achieved stardom at the age of 20 thanks to her starring role in A Room with a View (1986), a debut film directed by James Ivory, who adapted writer E. M. Forster’s story. She later would return to participate in different filmic adaptations of this writer’s work, such as Where Angels Fear to Tread (1991), by Charles Sturridge, or Return to Howards End (1992), a title directed again by Ivory.
For her portrayal in Iain Softley’s film The Wings of the Dove (1997), which adapted a novel by Henry James, she received a Golden Globe nomination, and she was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.
