Susan Abigail Tomalin; (New York, October 4th, 1946) is an American actress. After studying theater at the Catholic University of Washington, she married in 1967 with the actor Chris Sarandon, from whom she divorced in 1979. In 1970 he made her film debut with a supporting role in Joe: An American citizen, by John G. Avildsen. Her current net worth is $50 million.

She is the eldest of nine children of Philip Tomalin, an advertising executive, and Lenora Tomalin, a housewife. Her education was Catholic and conservative.

While she was attending high school, she was arrested for her involvement in the Vietnam protests and in favor of civil rights. She completed courses related to drama, philosophy, and military strategy which she paid by working as a secretary and a janitor.

Her beginnings in films.

After graduating in 1968, her husband found a jog in regional theaters around Washington D.C.  Her Life changed when she accompanying him in a reading for an agent in New York, surprisingly, they both signed contracts. They moved to New York. She performed at auditions for the movie and Joe gets the lead role. In 1975 She managed to work alongside Robert Redford in Hollywood as a small-town girl in “The Great Waldo Pepper”.

She continued appearing in a series of disastrous films like The Dragonfly in 1976, and The Other Face of Midnight in 1977. But in 1978 her luck changed when she got the role of Hattie, the mother of a prostitute played by Brooke Shields in “Pretty Baby” By Louis Malle. She continued to incarnate a waitress in Malle’s movie “Atlantic City” as well and nomination for the Academy Awards.

Growing career.

Divorced by Chris Sarandon in 1979, although they are still good friends. She related to the Italian director Franco Amurri whom she had her first child, Eva. In 1983. She made a new role as the lover of a bisexual vampire with Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie, but it was her next action with Cher, Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer in The Witches of Eastwick that takes her to the stardom. She had to learn how to play the cello at the last minute, and she was nearly electrocuted during a scene.

She then had a relationship with the actor Tim Robbins between 1988 and 2009, twelve years younger than her. The couple had two children, Jack Henry (born May 15, 1989) and Miles Guthrie (born May 4, 1992). With Thelma and Louise along with Geena Davis, she won an Oscar nomination. She was nominated again the following year for her role as a mother struggling to find a cure for the degenerative disorder of her son’s brain in the “Lorenzo Oil”.

In 1995, she finally got an Oscar, for best actress for “Dead Man Walking” film based on the autobiographical story of sister Helen Prejean, was directed by her husband Tim Robbins, and with Sean Penn, and his daughter Eva, in a short role.
