Kathy Bates is an Academy-award-winner actress from USA whose net worth is $32 million. Kathleen Doyle Bates was born on June 28th, 1948 in Memphis, Tennessee (United States). Her mother’s name was Bertye Kathleen Talbot, and her father was an engineer called Langdon Bates. After completing her high school studies at Memphis’ White Station, Kathy enrolled in acting at the Southern Methodist University of Dallas, where she graduated in 1969.

Previous jobs.

Before becoming an actress, Bates worked as a singer and as a shop assistant at the MOMA gift shop.

Her beginnings.

In New York, she began in the theater in the early 70’s. At the same time, and credited as Bobo Bates (it was her only film with that accreditation), she participated in “Taking Off” (1971), a film directed by Milos Forman.

Misery.

After several successes on Broadway, Kathy managed to triumph in Hollywood with her interpretation of Annie Wilkes. A fanatic persona in “Misery” (1990), adaptation of a book by Stephen King, and directed by Rob Reiner. For this film, the actress from Memphis managed to win the Oscar for best lead actress. She also won the Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Actress.

A year after the release of this film, Kathy married actor Tony Campisi. In 1997 they divorced, year in which she already kept a relationship with another actor, Bernard Hill.

Other films after Misery.

After “Misery,” Bates was Evelyn Couch in “Fried Green Tomatoes” (1991), a dramatic comedy based on a novel by Fannie Flagg. She played “Molly Brown” in “Titanic” (1997) and, among other roles, Robert Hertzel in “About Schmidt” (2002), film by which she was candidate to the Oscar as best supporting actress. Previously, she had been nominated for the political satire film “Primary Colors” (1998).

Television.

In addition to the film, Kathy has been involved in many telefilms such as “No Place like Home” (1989), “The West Side Waltz” (1995), “The Left Shift” (1996), “My Sister’s Guard” (2002) or “Warm Springs” (2005), and series, such as “Apocalypse” or “Six Feet Under.” For her work in “The Left Shift” she was awarded with a TV Golden Globe.

In “Around the World In 80 Days” (2004), adaptation of the famous novel by Jules Verne. Starred by Jackie Chan. She portrayed queen Victoria.

Other films.

In the road movie “Bonneville” (2006) she rode a Bonneville to travel along with Jessica Lange and Joan Allen. In “Fred Claus” (2007) she interpreted the mother of the brothers Claus. The same year, she was featured in “P.S., I Love You” (2007), a film in which she was Patricia, Hilary Swank’s mother.

In “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (2008), she shared credits with Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly.

Personal life.

In 2012, she underwent a double mastectomy after suffering from breast cancer. She had no children.
